And it was a seamless transition. Based on the reports of others, I was expecting that transitioning from Amazon Advantage, where I provide the books, to Lightning Source, where they provide the books, could take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to begin to register on the sell page for Complete Guide to Online High Schools. Importantly, this meant that the book might show as:
- Not available for sale; or
- Available but not at a discounted price.
As of today, it is still selling for the same price will the same discount off list price. Through Lightning Source I offer a 25% discount. Sometimes Amazon will decide that their profit margin isn't high enough on a book and they will drop some or all of their discounted price so you end up with a book at full retail. Not a great place to be.
As soon as all of the books were sold through Amazon Advantage, I conducted a scientific experiment. The sell page was still showing that it was: "In Stock. Ships from and sold by Amazon.com." I bought a copy to see what would happen. Fairly quickly, a sale registered and Lightning Source since that day has begun selling copies. While I do not know for sure they are to Amazon, the evidence is compelling based on previous sales from LSI.
Yes, the profit margin is smaller through LSI than through Advantage, but I don't have to ship books. That is a decided advantage for me.
