Here's your homework assignment:
Go to Google. Type your first and last name inside quotes. Wait for results.
Does your name top the list? Are you even on the first page of hits? One way that people find you and find out about you is Google. College admissions folks and potential employers do this. Friends do this. Loyal readers do this.
I am fortunate that for the last several years, my name is most of that first page. Yes, there is ebb and flow (Damn you, Thomas Nixon Carver!), but as a rule, most of its mine. Really much of the first couple pages.
There are several reasons for why that has happened:
- I have a long-standing website.
- I have written books. Thank you for the power of Amazon!
- I have written articles. Thank you, About.com, Elearners.com, and Ezinearticles.com.
- I have multiple websites. (See here, here, here, and here.)
And so on. I am also not a Smith, Garcia, Lee, or any one of the other most popular last names. Yes, there are many Nixons out there, to be sure, but less than some other family names.
While you can do little about your last name, you can increase your online presence. Write articles, develop a larger web presence, create a blog, and so on.
Start now. Start today. This is even more important if you are that Smith, Garcia, or Lee!
